If you are concerned about virus protection and keeping your personal data private, consider Norton Internet Security 2002 Professional Edition. This version is appropriate for home, home office, and corporate users, and offers a number of slick features to keep you and your data protected.

The package contains four key components: managed settings, productivity control, a personal firewall, and virus protection for both desktop and handheld computers. Our main interest was in the firewall security. We found that the default settings were a good middle-of-the-road approach, although your usage may vary. Accordingly, you can customize your firewall preferences to increase your security level (three grades, from minimal protection to block all until you give permission). You can also manage the applications allowed to access the Internet and how, as well as limit the use of Java applets and ActiveX controls that are prevalent on the Web today. Automatic Internet Access Control works in tandem with these options, maintaining a list of programs that are recognized safe applications (such as Netscape, Microsoft Outlook, or instant messaging software).

The firewall also protects you from port scans, in which attackers scan the ports of your computer to see what they might be able to find. Following such an attack, the AutoBlock feature will stop all inbound communication from this attacker for a half-hour. Norton Internet Security does have a flaw in this area: some users (including us) experience a complete or partial blocking of Internet access due of AutoBlock. Norton is aware of this potential and provides a handy document to troubleshoot this problem. (Our problem was resolved after rebooting our computer a second time after install.)

Other features that make this package shine include Productivity Control and the administrative settings and capabilities. If you are in charge of several computers, you'll be able to manage and monitor your group's usage of the Internet. With Productivity Control enabled, any incoming information from restricted Web sites or outgoing information from Internet applications can be blocked. The settings are linked to user accounts, allowing protection while that user is logged on. The list of blocked Web sites is managed directly by Symantec, so you won't even have to think about it (although you can block additional sites or allow for exceptions, and customize it to the application or by topic).

Bringing all of the package's resources together is Security Assistant, available only to administrators. From here, administrators can change any aspect or preference of Norton Internet Security, including Internet "zone control," intrusion-detection options, and productivity controls. Our favorite feature of the entire package is also managed here: Ad Blocking. Norton Internet Security can scan for ads and remove them from Web pages, speeding up download times and helping you maintain your sanity while surfing. And if Norton Internet Security misses an ad, simply drag the ad to the trash can icon and the ad will be remembered, and will never appear in your browser again.

Norton Internet Security 2001 3.0 contains three of Norton's renowned security software tools: Firewall, AntiVirus, and Privacy Control.

Norton Personal Firewall (NPF) 2001 is a hybrid package, combining firewall functionality with privacy controls, running under Windows 95, 98, 2000, and Me, as well as NT Workstation 4.0. At its heart, NPF is a rules-based interactive "learning" firewall, supporting both inbound and outbound filtering. The firewall itself will block ActiveX controls and Java applets, as well as more basic TCP/IP attacks, and has special built-in rules designed to block hack attacks from notorious programs such as the BackOrifice Trojan, or other intrusive spyware.

The big problem with firewalls is their unbelievable complexity--configuring one makes rocket science look easy. However, Symantec has gone a long way toward hiding all the complexities of a firewall behind a simple front end: users can simply choose between low, medium, or high levels of protection. But if you do want to tweak, you can still drill down to fine-tune NPF's security configuration. If you spend a lot of time online, sooner or later you'll need firewall protection and Norton Personal Firewall is arguably the best on the market.

Competition between antivirus software vendors is particularly fierce but many publications rate Norton AntiVirus as one of the best. The best is even better with Norton AntiVirus 2001, which incorporates a number of significant new features and improvements, both in the accuracy of its detection capabilities and in its usability. The new SmartScan virus scanning engine, for example, is faster than its predecessor, though it can still take its time: tested on a P200 notebook it took 23 minutes to scan some 21,000 files. This sort of job can be scheduled to take place during the night, and time isn't a problem. By default, Norton AntiVirus is configured aggressively, with nearly all the scanning options enabled. For example, it has heuristics turned on by default and its manual scanner checks every file, not just files with specific extensions. Though these settings may increase the performance hit, they also provide more reliable protection. You can easily configure the program to scan only specific types of files, but most users are better served by trading off some performance for such thorough protection.

The key to successful virus detection is keeping your virus definition files up-to-date, hence the much appreciated revamping of the old LiveUpdate (LU) feature. Not only are update files much smaller in size, but LiveUpdate will automatically update all the Norton products installed on your PC in one go. If you have a permanent Internet connection, you can configure LU to update automatically, in the background. It can also be set to update whenever you're online. There's now a worldwide network of LU servers, so updating should also be faster and smoother. And if the worst happens and you can't boot your PC because of a virus infection, you can actually boot from the Norton AntiVirus CD-ROM and clean it up from there--a neat trick.

Despite Norton AntiVirus 2001's lengthy scan time and mild system performance hit, it provides just about the easiest and most thorough virus protection on the market. Combine that with superior firewall functionality and privacy control, and you get a product that provides solid defense against even the most threatening intruders. --Roger Gann

It also protects against invisible and malicious e-mail scripts by looking for suspicious behavior such as trying to open, write, or delete files. Any suspect activity is immediately stopped.

Of course, any antivirus product is only as good as its ability to stop viruses from infecting your system. Happily, McAfee Internet Security 5.0 has been given a 100% rating by Virus Bulletin, so long as you keep it up-to-date. Like the other products in McAfee's security lineup, McAfee Internet Security 5.0 uses Instant Updater, which constantly checks for product updates and automatically downloads them when you are online.

The firewall function in McAfee Internet Security 5.0 controls which of your applications can access the Internet, and stops them from divulging your personal information without your knowledge. It also stops hackers from accessing your PC remotely.

The firewall recognizes most common programs and automatically creates rules to allow them to communicate with the Internet. Users can create their own rules, but this can be tricky for the novice as some of the warning dialog boxes tend toward jargon-filled prose.

McAfee Internet Security 5.0 works with Windows Internet Connection Sharing, and has also been enhanced for broadband so home networks are fully supported. Also new in this release is an intrusion-detection system that blocks port scanners.

Of course, the most important aspect is how well it actually works, and the firewall passes all the usual tests with flying colors. It happily deals with all the usual intrusion techniques, and the auto update feature ensures the product is able to cope with any new threats as they appear.

We did have some difficulty getting an e-mail program called Ameol to work with McAfee Internet Security 5.0, but all other programs we tried worked fine.

While dial-up users can be victims of unwanted intruders, the same aspects of narrowband connections that we dislike--slower speed, less stable connection--also make them more difficult avenues of approach for hacking. But the fat, always-on pipelines of broadband connections, such as DSL and cable access, make them ripe for malicious attacks. While it's true that hacks on average users are rare, the better-safe-than-sorry school of thought applies here.

The Norton Personal Firewall bundled with Internet Security affords excellent software protection for the average user. After installing the software, we visited Gibson Research Corporation's Shields Up! (www.grc.com), which tests the protection levels of your PC. With the firewall set to its medium level (it also offers high and minimal), the probing software couldn't even detect our system, much less simulate any attacks.

The individual pieces of Norton Internet Security are entwined with the latest version of LiveUpdate, which automatically downloads and installs the latest patches and virus definitions on a schedule or manually (it offers periodic reminders to update). A year of free updates is included with Internet Security, after which you'll have to purchase a new subscription.

If you've already got an up-to-date antivirus program on your PC and you don't feel you need the privacy controls and ad blocking of this suite, you might consider the standalone Norton Personal Firewall 2001.
